Hunter x Hunter watch order
Watch Hunter x Hunter (2011) from episode 1 to 148. It retells the story from the beginning and goes further than the 1999 anime, so you don't need the older version first. The two movies are optional side stories: Phantom Rouge after Yorknew City, The Last Mission after the series.
Our Hunter x Hunter filler list covers the 2011 series. Its only filler is two recap episodes, 13 and 26.
The order
| Step | Watch | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hunter x Hunter (2011), episodes 1-58 | Hunter Exam, Zoldyck Family, Heavens Arena and Yorknew City. Skip recaps 13 and 26 if you like. |
| 2 | Phantom Rouge (2013 film, optional) | An original side story built around Kurapika and the Phantom Troupe. |
| 3 | Hunter x Hunter (2011), episodes 59-148 | Greed Island, Chimera Ant and the Chairman Election, to the end. |
| 4 | The Last Mission (2013 film, optional) | An original side story. Easiest after the series. |
The 2011 series aired from October 2011 to September 2014. Without the two recaps, it's 146 episodes, about 56 hours.
Hunter x Hunter 2011 or 1999?
The 2011 series by Madhouse isn't a sequel to the 1999 anime. It restarts from the first chapter of the manga and carries on through the Chimera Ant (76-136) and Chairman Election (137-148) arcs.
The 1999 version by Nippon Animation ran for 62 TV episodes, followed by three OVA series (8, 8 and 14 episodes) that finish Yorknew City and adapt Greed Island. It stops there. It has its own fans and a different tone, but if you watch it, you'll still need the 2011 series from about episode 76 onward to see the rest.
For a first watch, pick the 2011 series and watch it all. Come back to the 1999 version later if you're curious about how it handled the early arcs.
Where the movies fit
- Phantom Rouge (January 2013) is an original story that centers on Kurapika and the Phantom Troupe. Watch it after Yorknew City, which ends at episode 58, so you already know them.
- The Last Mission (December 2013) is also an original story, with Heavens Arena and the Hunter Association at its heart. Watch it after the series to avoid any surprises about the Association.
Neither film adapts the manga, and the TV story doesn't depend on them.
Questions
Does Hunter x Hunter have filler?
Only two recap episodes in the 2011 series: 13 and 26. Everything else adapts the manga.
Is there more Hunter x Hunter anime after episode 148?
No. The manga continues past the point where the anime ends, but no new anime had been announced when we checked on Nov 3, 2026.
Can I skip the Greed Island arc?
We wouldn't. It shapes Gon and Killua's skills for the Chimera Ant arc.
