Dragon Ball movies in order

There are 21 Dragon Ball anime films, from Curse of the Blood Rubies (1986) to Super Hero (2022). Only the last four matter for the main story: Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F', which Dragon Ball Super retells, then Broly and Super Hero after Super. The other 17 are side adventures.

For how the films fit with the TV series, see our Dragon Ball watch order. For the episodes you can skip, use the Dragon Ball filler list and the DBZ filler list.

Years are Japanese release years. The list covers Toei Animation's anime films, not the live-action film or TV specials.

Dragon Ball films (4)

Made alongside the first series. Side stories; The Path to Power (1996) retells the start of the story.

Dragon Ball Z films (13)

Standalone adventures released during Dragon Ball Z. Several are hard to place between TV events, so watch them as extras after Z.

The newer films (4)

These four continue the story after Z. Dragon Ball Super episodes 1-27 retell the first two.

Which Dragon Ball movies do you need?

  1. Battle of Gods (2013) and Resurrection 'F' (2015): watch these, or Dragon Ball Super episodes 1-14 and 15-27, which retell them. You don't need both versions.
  2. Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018): after Super episode 131.
  3. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022): after Broly.

The 2018 Broly is a new take on the character. It doesn't follow on from the three 1990s Broly films, so you can skip those and still follow it.

Questions

Are the older Dragon Ball Z movies canon?

They're side stories made for cinema while the TV series was running, and the TV story never depends on them. Several are hard to fit between TV events, which is why we suggest watching them after Z.

What order should I watch the three Broly films?

Release order: The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993), Second Coming (1994), then Bio-Broly (1994).

Where does Dragon Ball Daima fit?

Daima is a TV series, not a film. It's set after the Majin Buu story; our watch order explains where to put it.
