Bleach filler worth watching
Zanpakuto Unknown Tales (episodes 230-255) is the Bleach filler arc to watch if you watch only one. The Gotei 13 Invading Army (317-341) is a good second choice. The Amagai arc (168-189) is for viewers who want more Soul Society and don't mind a slow start.
Bleach has a lot of filler: 159 of its 366 episodes (43.4%). Everything on this page can be skipped without losing the manga story. Our Bleach filler list has every episode label and the full skip ranges.
The filler we'd keep
| Episodes | Pick | Watch it for |
|---|---|---|
| 230-255 | Zanpakuto Unknown Tales | The captains' swords turn on their owners |
| 317-341 | Gotei 13 Invading Army | Copies of the captains, and one last Soul Society story before the ending |
| 168-189 | The New Captain Shusuke Amagai | A Soul Society mystery, for patient viewers |
Watch each pick where it falls in the episode order. Our main list marks Zanpakuto as optional and the other two as skips: they're here as extras, not as missing story.
Episodes 230-255: Zanpakuto Unknown Tales
The spirits of the Soul Reapers' swords take human form and rebel against their owners. Each captain has to face their own weapon, which gives the arc a reason to show sides of familiar characters the manga rarely has time for.
It's the most popular Bleach filler for a reason: the idea is strong and the sword spirits are fun to watch. It interrupts the Fake Karakura Town fights, so if you're impatient to get back to Aizen, save it for a rewatch.
Stop at 255. The Beast Swords episodes that follow (256-265) continue with the sword spirits but are weaker, and our list marks them as a skip.
Episodes 317-341: Gotei 13 Invading Army
Copies of the captains attack Soul Society, and nobody can be sure who is real. It comes after the Aizen story and before the final original arc, so it works as a last outing with the full cast before things change.
Episode 342 is not part of this pick: it adapts a farewell from the manga, so it stays in every route. If you skip this arc, still watch 342.
Episodes 168-189: the Amagai arc
A new captain, Shusuke Amagai, takes over the 3rd Division, and his arrival is tied to a mystery inside Soul Society. It runs 22 episodes and takes a while to get going.
It sits in the middle of the Hueco Mundo story, which makes it the hardest of the three to fit in. We'd only add it if you're happy with a long detour from the rescue mission.
What about the rest?
The Bount arcs (64-108) are the longest filler in Bleach, and our list marks them as a skip. Watch 109 even if you skip them: it's mixed, with two official bonus chapters about Ichigo and Rukia. The other skips are listed on the Bleach arc sheet.
Is Bleach filler worth watching?
Some of it. Bleach's filler comes in long arcs, so it's easier to pick one arc and commit to it than to dip in. Zanpakuto Unknown Tales is the safest choice.
Does Thousand-Year Blood War have filler?
It adapts the final manga arc, with expanded scenes. We haven't labelled it episode by episode; see the Bleach watch order for how it fits after episode 366.
Should I skip all filler on a first watch?
If the long detours would make you drop the show, yes. Follow the Bleach episodes to keep and come back for Zanpakuto later.
